What is Socialization
Human infants are born without any culture yet. When a baby is born, socialization takes place in order for him to have a culture based on what his parents and his environment would teach him. So what exactly is socialization?
Socialization is the learning process which results to the development of personality through adapting to the society's culture.
the procedure of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society.
The act of adapting behavior to the norms of a culture or society is called socialization
It also entails the activities which an individual engages in which eventually leads to the acquiring of beliefs, habits and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status.
It encompasses the process of acquiring knowledge about another person`s culture and learning how to live within it. When we talk about culture, we are referring to the totality of moral norms, values, language, attitudes and other aspects comprising a society. We all have roles to accomplish in our various society, and socialization helps us to acquire knowledge and skills to satisfy these societal functions.
Types of Socialization
Generally, there are five types of socialization which includes: primary, secondary, developmental, anticipatory and resocialization.
• Primary socialization
This is the type of socialization that takes place when a infant learns the values, norms and behaviors that should be showcased in order to live in tandem with specific culture.
A child sees his father fight regularly. The child would tend to think that this behavior acceptable socially, so he would start picking up fights with other people.
• Secondary socialization
This type of socialization takes place when a person learns an appropriate behavior to be put on view within a smaller group which is still a constituent of a larger society. The changes within the beliefs, attitudes and values of an individual are seen to be less important than the changes made in him as he participates in the larger society.
Example: A young high school chap chooses a career in medicine after involving in a small group career seminar pioneered by young doctors.
• Developmental socialization
This type of socialization involves the process of learning and developing our social skills.
Example: A shy student in senior high school begins to teach freshers in junior high school.
• Anticipatory socialization
This type of socialization refers to the process wherein a person practices or rehearses for future social relationships.
A child anticipates parenthood as he observes his parents perform their daily roles.
• Resocialization
This type of socialization involves doing away with previous behavior patterns and accepting new ones so the individual can evolve from one part of his life to another. Resocialization is said to be a continuous occurrence throughout human life cycle.
Importance of Socialization
• Socialization converts man, the biological being into man, the social being.
• Socialization contributes to the development of personality.
• Helps individuals to become disciplined
role.
• Helps to depict different roles
Every individual has to depict various roles in his life. Every cultural role is entwined around norms and is associated with different attitudes. The process of socialization does not only assists an individual to learn the norms associated with roles but also to develop appropriate attitudes to execute those roles.
• Helps to reduce social distance
• Contributes to the stability of the social order.
• Provides the knowledge of skills which includes economic, political, educational, professional and religious roles in latter life.
• Helps to develop right aspiration in life.
